ABSTRACT

Background and objective: Phytochemicals are plant-based bioactive ingredients found in tea, fruits, and vegetables with multiple health benefits. This study aimed to identify and quantify the detectable phytochemicals in selected products of chamomile herbal tea (CHT) using the Gas Chromatography - Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) approach. Methods: Selected CHTs were coded as CHT-A to CHT-G. CHT-F was crude and unbranded however, CHT-G was an oil extract of CHT. Ethanolic extracts of CHT were analysed and quantified for their phytoconstituents using the GC-FID method. Results: Phytochemicals detected in their order of abundance in most CHTs were flavonoids > glycosides > alkaloids > steroids > anti-nutrients > saponins > tannins > resveratrol. The flavonoids comprised rutin > flavanone > flavone > anthocyanin > epicatechin > kaempferol > naringenin > proanthocyanin, etc. where the glycosides found in each CHT involved cardiac and cyanogenic glycosides. Alkaloids were highest in CHT-A as ribalinidine > spartein > lunamarin with ephedrine detected just in CHT-B, CHT-C, CHT-D, CHT-E and CHT-F. Saponins occurred in four samples mainly as sapogenin. Anti-nutrients were detected in each CHT and included the phytates and oxalates. Resveratrol was detected in three samples only. Conclusion: Most of the CHTs evaluated showed the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, steroids, anti-nutrients, saponins, tannins and resveratrol.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The search for treatments that accelerate the healing of lesions is of constant interest. Matricaria recutita (chamomile) is a plant with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties, and antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) eradicates microorganisms, which favors tissue repair. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the topical use of chamomile with or without aPDT on tissue repair in rats' tongues. Methodology A total of 75 male Wistar rats underwent standardized ulceration on the dorsum of the tongue using a punch of 5 mm diameter and were randomly allocated into the following groups: control (G1), chamomile fluid extract (G2), chamomile infusion (G3), aPDT (G4), and chamomile infusion + aPDT (G5). On the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days postoperatively, euthanasia was performed, and the ulcers were measured using calipers. The presence of edema, inflammatory infiltrate, cellularity, re-epithelialization, and characterization of total collagen were evaluated using sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and Red Sirius. Histomorphometry analyses of the percentage of total collagen, the distance from the basal layer to the epithelial surface, and the thickness of the stratum corneum were performed. Descriptive (absolute/relative frequencies and modes) and exploratory analyses were performed. The associations between the groups and the presence of ulcers were analyzed with Fisher's exact test. All analyses were performed using the R program and statistical significance was set at p=0.05. Results The G2 positively modulated the exudative and proliferative phases of repair, both clinically (p<0.0001) and histologically, whether in descriptive or inferential analyses (p<0.05). The G3 showed a significant difference in clinical parameters compared with G1 (p<0.0001). The G4 and G5 did not positively modulate tissue repair. Conclusion The chamomile fluid extract showed better outcomes for tissue repair in the rat tongue.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of compound chamomile and lidocaine hydrochloride gel in prevention of complications related to laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion.Methods:Ninety American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status Ⅰ or Ⅱ patients, aged 18-60 yr, undergoing elective surgery with ventilation using LMA under general anesthesia, were divided into 3 groups ( n=30 each) using a random number table method: paraffin oil group (group A), compound lidocaine cream group (group B), and compound chamomile and lidocaine hydrochloride gel group (group C). The paraffin oil, compound lidocaine cream, and compound chamomile and lidocaine hydrochloride gel were evenly applied on the front, shoulder and back of the LMA before inserting the LMA in A, B and C groups, respectively.The severity of sore throat, oropharyngeal mucositis score, hoarseness score and occurrence in each time period (0-1 h, >1-6 h, >6-24 h, > 24-48 h) were recorded at 1, 6, 24 and 48 h after removal of the laryngeal mask.The stress responses during removal of the LMA and occurrence of drug-related adverse reactions within 48 h after removal of LMA were recorded. Results:Twenty-nine cases in group A, 28 cases in group B and 27 cases in group C completed the trial.Compared with group A, the severity of sore throat at each time point after removal of the LMA and incidence of sore throat in each time period were significantly decreased, the oropharyngeal mucositis score at 6, 24 and 48 h after removal of the LMA and the incidence of oropharyngeal mucositis in the time period >1-48 h were decreased, and the incidence of drug-related adverse reactions was increased in group C ( P<0.05). Compared with group B, the severity of sore throat at 6 h after removal of the LMA and incidence of sore throat > 1-48 h after removal of the LMA were significantly decreased, the oropharyngeal mucositis score at 6, 24 and 48 h after removal of the LMA and incidence of oropharyngeal mucositis in the time period >1-48 h after LMA removal were reduced, and the incidence of drug-related adverse reactions was decreased in group C ( P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the hoarseness score and incidence of hoarseness after removal of the LMA and incidence of stress responses during removal of the LMA among the three groups ( P>0.05). Conclusions:Compound chamomile and lidocaine hydrochloride gel has a certain efficacy in preventing complications related to LMA placement.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze oxidative stress and the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the salivary glands of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats with ad libitum consumption of chamomile tea in substitution of water for 21 days. Rats were divided in two control groups (untreated control and treated control) and two diabetic groups (untreated diabetic and treated diabetic). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) activities, total antioxidant status (TAS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were determined. The chemical composition of the chamomile essential oil revealed 39 compounds, accounting for 93.5% of the total oils. The polyphenolic profile of the tea showed the presence of apigenin, luteolin, umbelliferone, and esculetin. SOD, GPx, CAT, and TAS levels were lower in the parotid (PA) diabetic glands, but treatment increased their concentration in both the submandibular (SM) and PA diabetic salivary glands. Increased MDA levels were observed in the PA diabetic glands, which were decreased by the consumption of chamomile tea with a reduction in hyperglycemia compared to that in untreated diabetic rats. However, the SM diabetic glands showed no difference in the MDA content. The consumption of chamomile tea prevented oxidative stress in the PA glands of diabetic rats, exhibiting hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects. Thus, chamomile tea could be a potential candidate for preventing oral complications in diabetes mellitus.

RESUMEN Fundamentación: En el tratamiento tradicional de la estomatitis aftosa no se incluye la tintura de manzanilla al 20 %, sin embargo, sus propiedades justifican su posible utilización. Objetivo: Evaluar la eficacia de la tintura de manzanilla al 20 % como alternativa de tratamiento en pacientes con estomatitis aftosa en la disminución de la intensidad del dolor. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio experimental abierto, controlado y aleatorizado en el municipio Sancti Spíritus entre septiembre de 2019 y marzo de 2021. Se seleccionaron 39 pacientes con estomatitis aftosa mayores de 12 años de edad; mediante asignación aleatoria, se conformaron 2 grupos al azar: 1 de estudio aplicando tintura de manzanilla al 20 % y otro de control utilizando triamcinolona al 0.1 %. La variable de resultado principal del estudio utilizada fue la eficacia. Resultados: Predominó el sexo femenino para ambos grupos. En el grupo estudio, la edad más representativa fue de 24 a 35 años (25 %) y en el grupo control predominaron las edades de 36 a 47 años (26.3 %). Al comparar la intensidad del dolor en los diferentes momentos de evolución no existieron diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos. Se observó un predominio de pacientes sin reacciones adversas, estas se presentaron en un número muy reducido, 1 paciente en cada grupo. Conclusiones: La tintura de manzanilla al 20 % como alternativa de tratamiento de los pacientes con estomatitis aftosa, resultó de eficacia similar a la triamcinolona al 0.1 %.


ABSTRACT Background: Traditional treatment of aphthous stomatitis does not include 20 % chamomile tincture, however its properties justify its possible use. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of 20 % chamomile tincture as an alternative treatment in patients with aphthous stomatitis for the reduction of pain intensity. Methodology: An exposed, controlled and randomized experimental study was conducted in Sancti Spíritus municipality between September 2019 and March 2021. Thirty-nine patients with aphthous stomatitis older than 12 years of age were selected; by random assignment, 2 groups were randomly formed: 1 study group applying chamomile tincture at 20 % and another control group using triamcinolone at 0.1 %. Efficiency was the main outcome study variable. Results: Female sex predominated in both groups. In the study group, the most representative age was 24 to 35 years (25 %) in the control group the predominant age was 36 to 47 years (26.3 %). When comparing the pain intensity at different times of evolution there were no significant differences between the two groups. A patients' prevalence without adverse reactions was observed, these occurred in a very small number, 1 patient in each group. Conclusions: The efficacy of chamomile tincture at 20 %, as an alternative treatment for patients with aphthous stomatitis, was similar to that of triamcinolone at 0.1 %.

RESUMEN Fundamento: Las aftas son causa de consultas frecuentes entre las urgencias estomatológicas. La tintura de manzanilla, resulta muy efectiva por su propiedad analgésica, antiinflamatoria, protectora, reparadora de membrana y reepitelizante. Objetivo: Ilustrar los resultados de la tintura de manzanilla al 20 % como alternativa de tratamiento en una paciente con estomatitis aftosa Presentación de caso: Paciente de 66 años de edad, femenina, con antecedentes de salud, fumadora, sometida a estrés, que acudió a consulta por lesiones aftosas dolorosas en el borde lateral izquierdo y dorso de la lengua. Conclusiones: La paciente con estomatitis aftosa, tratada con tintura de manzanilla al 20 %, mostró moderación del dolor a los 3 días, evolución general satisfactoria y cicatrización de las lesiones a los 5 días de la primera aplicación.


ABSTRACT Background: Aphthous ulcers are a frequent cause of assistance at the stomatology emergencies. Chamomile tincture (Matricaria Chamomilla) is very effective due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, protective, membrane-repairing and re-epithelialising properties. Objective: To illustrate the results of chamomile tincture at 20 % as an alternative treatment in a patient with aphthous stomatitis. Case report: A 66-year-old female patient, with healthy backgrounds, smoker, under stress, who consulted because of painful aphthous lesions on the left lateral border and tongue dorsum. Conclusions: The patient with aphthous stomatitis, treated with chamomile tincture at 20 %, showed pain moderation after 3 days, satisfactory general evolution and healing of the lesions 5 days after the first application.

ABSTRACT

A mucosite oral (MO) é uma grave complicação dos tratamentos antineoplásicos, caracterizada pela presença de lesões erosivas e ulcerativas na mucosa oral, que podem causar uma diminuição significativa na qualidade de vida do paciente. Realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre o uso de agentes naturais na prevenção e tratamento da MO induzida por quimioterapia e/ou radioterapia. Artigos científicos foram pesquisados nas bases de dados SciELO, LILACS e Medline/PubMed, utilizando-se os descritores chamomile, propolis, honey, aloe, chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis e phytotherapeutic drug. A partir dessa busca e dos critérios de inclusão adotados, 22 artigos foram selecionados. Na maioria dos estudos analisados, o uso de produtos naturais, como camomila, própolis, mel e aloe vera, foi capaz de diminuir a incidência da MO e a severidade dessas lesões e, além disso, permitiu um melhor controle da dor local, sendo considerada uma boa opção terapêutica. O uso de produtos naturais tornou-se um importante método alternativo para tratamento e prevenção da MO, pois é uma terapia de baixo custo, que apresenta menos reações adversas e que podem ser implementadas pelos profissionais da saúde bucal... Oral mucositis (OM) is a serious complication of antineoplastic treatments, characterized by the presence of erosive and ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa, which may cause a significant decrease in the quality of life of the patient. To perform a literature review about the use of natural agents in the prevention and treatment of OM induced by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Scientific articles were searched in the Scielo, Lilacs and Medline / PubMed databases using the descriptors chamomile, propolis, honey, aloe, chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis and phytotherapeutic drugs. From that research and according to the inclusion criteria, 22 articles were selected to compose this literature review. In most of the analyzed studies, the use of natural products, such as chamomile, propolis, honey and aloe vera was able to decrease the incidence of OM and the severity of these leions, and also allowed a better control of local pain, thus being considered a good therapeutic option. The use of natural products became an important alternative method for the treatment and prevention of OM, since it is a low-cost treatment, which presents less adverse effects and that can be implemented by oral health professionals... La mucositis oral (MO) es una complicación grave de los tratamientos antineoplásicos, caracterizada por la presencia de lesiones erosivas y ulcerativas en la mucosa oral, que pueden provocar una disminución significativa de la calidad de vida del paciente. Realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre el uso de agentes naturales en la prevención y el tratamiento de la MO inducida por quimioterapia y / o radioterapia. Se realizaron búsquedas de artículos científicos en las bases de datos SciELO, LILACS y Medline/PubMed, utilizando los descriptores Manzanilla; Própolis; Miel; Aloe; Estomatitis; Medicamentos Fitoterápicos. De esta búsqueda y de los criterios de inclusión adoptados se seleccionaron 22 artículos. En la mayoría de los estudios analizados, el uso de productos naturales, como manzanilla, própolis, miel y aloe vera, consiguió reducir la incidencia de MO y la gravedad de estas lesiones y, además, permitió un mejor control del dolor local, siendo considerada una buena opción terapéutica. El uso de productos naturales se ha convertido en un método alternativo importante para el tratamiento y prevención de la MO, por ser una terapia de bajo costo, que tiene menos reacciones adversas y que puede ser implementada por profesionales de la salud bucal... ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To st udy t he effects of total flavonoids from chamomile on lipid metabolism of hyperlipidemia model mice and its potential mechanism. METHODS :Thirty male C 57BL/6J-ApoE-/- mice were randomly divided into model group , positive control group(fenofibrate 30 mg/kg)and chamomile total flavonoids low-dose ,medium-dose and high-dose groups (88, 176,352 mg/kg),with 6 mice in each group. In addition ,6 male C 57BL/6J mice were used as normal control group. Mice in normal control group were fed with ordinary diet ,and mice in other groups were fed with high-fat diet for 8 weeks to replicate hyperlipidemia model. At the time of making model ,administration groups were given relevant liquid (using 1% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as solvent );normal control group and model group were given 1% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose intragastrically,200 mL per gavage ,once a day ,for consecutive 8 weeks. The body weight of mice in each group was weighed before medication and 8 weeks after medication. The serum contents of total cholesterol (TC),triacylglycerol(TG),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C),aspartate aminotransferase (AST)and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in mice were detected after last administration ;the contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA)as well as the protein expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α(PPARα),carnitine palmityl transferase 1A(CPT1A)and peroxase acyl-CoA oxidase 1(ACOX1)in liver tissue were determined. The pathological changes i n liver tissue were observed. RESULTS:Compared w ith before medication ,the body weight of each group showed an increasing trend after 8 weeks of medication. Compared with normal control group ,body weight ,the contents of TC ,TG, LDL-C,AST and ALT in serum and MDA content in live r lan- tissue of mice in model group were significantly increased wei516@sina.com after 8 weeks of medication (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The ·2706· China Pharmacy content of HDL-C in serum and the cont ent of SOD in liver tissue ,as well as the protein expressions of PPARα,CPT1A and ACOX1 were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01),and the structure of liver tissue was disorganized ,with circular fat vacuoles of different sizes and lipid droplets of different sizes in the cytoplasm. Compared with model group ,body weight (except for chamomile total flavonoids low-dose group )of mice ,serum contents of TC ,TG,LDL-C,AST and ALT ,content of MDA in liver tissue (except for chamomile total flavonoids low-dose and medium-dose groups )were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P< 0.01). Serum content of HDL-C ,content of SOD in liver tissue ,protein expressions of PPARα,CPT1A(except for chamomile total flavonoids low-dose and medium-dose groups ) and ACOX 1 were significantly increased (P<0.05 or P<0.01);liver tissue structure was clear ,and liver fat vacuoles were improved to varying degrees ,and less lipid droplets. The improvement effect of the above indexes was the best in the chamomile total flavonoids high-dose group. CONCLUSIONS :Chamomile total flavonoids can prevent the occurrence of hyperlipidemia in C57BL/6J-ApoE -/- mice,the mechanism of which may be associated with up-regulation of PPARα expression,the improvement of liver injury and oxidant stress injury.

Objective@#To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel for postoperative hypospadias in children.@*METHODS@#From January to December 2020, we treated 116 children with distal hypospadias in the Department of Urology, Department of Pediatrics and the Seventh Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital, 58 by primary Snodgrass urethroplasty only (the control group) and the other 58 with Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel smeared on the penis postoperatively in addition (the trial group). We compared the operation time and postoperative pain score, edema regression and incidence of infection between the two groups, followed by statistical analysis using T test and Chi-square test.@*RESULTS@#All the operations were successfully completed by the same surgeon under general anesthesia. There were no statistically significant differences between the trial and control groups in age ([2.5 ± 0.8] vs [2.4 ± 0.6] yr, P > 0.05) or operation time ([95.6 ± 14.5] vs [97.1 ± 15.2] min, P > 0.05). No incision infection occurred in any of the cases. The pain scores at dressing removal were remarkably lower in the trial than in the control group at 2 hours (1.4 ± 1.0 vs 2.6 ± 1.3, P < 0.05), 24 hours (2.2 ± 1.3 vs 3.9 ± 1.6, P < 0.05), 48 hours (1.2 ± 0.7 vs 1.6 ± 0.9, P < 0.05) and 72 hours after surgery (2.5 ± 0.8 vs 3.7 ± 1.8, P < 0.05). Significantly more cases of edema regression were achieved in the trial than in the control group at 2 weeks postoperatively (35 vs 19, P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel can effectively relieve pain, reduce edema and accelerate edema regression after surgery in children with hypospadias, and therefore deserves wide clinical application.、.

Objectives: The present study was conducted to investigate the protective effects of chamomile oil from Matricaria chamomilla against type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and its potential mechanisms. Methods: T1DM was established in male New Zealand white rabbits via a single intraperitoneal infusion of streptozotocin (STZ) (80 mg/kg body weight−1, dissolved in 0.2 mL of normal saline). Different doses of chamomile oil (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) were orally administrated to STZ induced diabetic rabbits for 21 consecutive days. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines was determined using ELISA assay. The expression of NF-κB and NLRP3 was measured using Western blot assay. Results: Compared with normal rabbits, STZ-induced diabetic rabbits exhibited significant increased levels of blood glucose and decreased levels of serum insulin that were reversed using middle and high tested dose of chamomile oil. Likewise, STZ-induced diabetic rabbits showed a significant increased expression of NF-κB and NLRP3 proteins in the pancreas tissue that was reversed by high tested dose of chamomile oil. Conclusion: Collectively, our findings demonstrated that chamomile oil possesses anti-hyperglycemic, and anti-inflammatory activities in STZ-induced diabetic rabbits by targeting inflammatory cytokines and NF-κB and NLRP3 signaling pathways.

Abstract Methotrexate (MTX) was shown to cause oxidative stress and liver damage. The objective was to investigate the possible protective effects of Matricaria Chamomilla L. (chamomile) extract with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties on the methotrexate-induced liver toxicity. Twenty four Wistar rats were divided into four groups. MTX group was injected intraperitoneally on days 7 and 14 with 20 mg/kg methotrexate. Groups CE200 (chamomile extract 200 mg/kg/day) and CE300 (chamomile extract 300 mg/kg/day) received the same dose of methotrexate added with chamomile extract orally for 15 days at 200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg respectively and the last group was healthy control group. Results of biochemical analyses indicated serum liver biomarkers (aminotransferases), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, and liver content of anti-oxidant enzymes (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)), reduced glutathione (GSH) and total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC) significantly increased (P <0.05-0.001) to normal in the CE treated groups compared to those of the MTX group. Serum bilirubin and hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly increased (P ˂0.001) in MTX group compared to those of the control group and decreased in CE200 and CE300 groups compared to those of the MTX group. Histopathological study showed inflammatory damage, necrotic cells and lipid infiltration in MTX group. In the groups treated with the chamomile extract, a significant improvement was observed in liver tissue in response to increased dose of the extract. In conclusion, chamomile extract administration could have a protective role in methotrexate-induced liver toxicity in rats through improving anti-oxidant defense system.

Introduction: The oral mucositis (OM) represents a frequent inflammatory condition in cancer patients, and poor oral hygiene has been related as a predisposing factor for its onset. Chamomile tea has been studied as an adjunctive therapy in the management of OM due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of chamomile tea associated with a rigorous oral hygiene in the OM prevention. Method: Randomized pilot clinical study, with 35 patients assigned to two groups. The case-group underwent oral hygiene control associated with the use of chamomile tea before starting the first cycle of chemotherapy, while the control group, there were no previous guidelines and prescriptions. Data about sociodemographic characteristics, the type of neoplasm and the chemotherapy scheme proposed were collected. The variables OM, salivary flow and pain associated to the oral cavity were evaluated, and statistical analysis was performed with significance level p <0.05. Results: It was observed that the majority of the patients had a mean age of 50 years, breast (57%) was the most prevalent tumor site and cyclophosphamide (52%), the most frequently used drug In this sample, no statistically significant result was observed in the two groups for OM, salivary flow and pain variables (p> 0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that the use of chamomile tea and the accuracy of oral hygiene were not sufficient to prevent OM.


Introdução: A mucosite oral (MO) representa uma condição inflamatória frequente em pacientes oncológicos e uma higiene oral insatisfatória tem sido relacionada como fator predisponente para o seu surgimento. O chá de camomila vem sendo estudado como terapia adjuvante no manejo da MO em razão das suas propriedades analgésicas e anti-inflamatórias. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do chá de camomila associada a uma rigorosa higiene oral na prevenção de MO. Método: Trata-se de um estudo-piloto clínico randomizado, no qual 35 pacientes foram alocados em dois grupos. O grupo-caso foi submetido ao controle de higiene oral associado ao uso do chá de camomila antes de iniciar o primeiro ciclo de quimioterapia; no grupo-controle, não houve orientações e prescrições prévias. Foram coletados dados referentes às características sociodemográficas, à neoplasia em questão e ao tipo de tratamento quimioterápico proposto. Foram avaliadas as variáveis MO, fluxo salivar e dor associada à cavidade oral, e realizada análise estatística com nível de significância p<0,05. Resultados: Observou-se que a maioria dos pacientes apresentava-se na quinta década de vida, a localização do tumor mais prevalente foi a mama (57%) e a droga mais utilizada por esses pacientes foi a ciclosfamida (52%). Nesta amostra, não foi observado resultado estatisticamente significativo entre os grupos, no que diz respeito às variáveis MO, fluxo salivar e dor (p>0,05). Conclusão: Os dados sugerem que o uso do chá de camomila e o rigor na higiene oral não foram suficientes para a prevenção da MO.


Introducción: La mucositis oral (MO) representa una afección inflamatoria frecuente en pacientes con cáncer, y la mala higiene bucal se ha relacionado como un factor predisponente para su aparición. El té de manzanilla se ha estudiado como una terapia adyuvante en el tratamiento de la OM debido a sus propiedades analgésicas y antiinflamatorias. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia del té de manzannilla asociado con una hygiene oral rigurosa en la prevención de la MO. Método: Fue un estudio clínico piloto aleatorizado, en el que treinta y cinco pacientes fueron asignados en dos grupos. El grupo de casos se sometió a un control de higiene oral asociado con el uso de té de manzanilla antes de comenzar el primer ciclo de quimioterapia, mientras que en el grupo de control, no había pautas ni recetas previas. Se recopilaron datos sobre las características sociodemográficas, el tipo de neoplasia y el esquema de quimioterapia propuesto. Se evaluaron las variables MO, flujo salival y dolor asociado a la cavidad oral, y se realizó un análisis estadístico con nivel de significancia p<0,05. Resultados: Se observó que la mayoría de los pacientes tenían una edad media de 50 años, el sitio del tumor más prevalente era la mama (57%) y el fármaco utilizado con mayor frecuencia era la ciclofamida (52%). En esta muestra, no se observaron resultados estadísticamente significativos entre los grupos con respecto a las variables MO, flujo salival y dolor (p>0,05). Conclusión: Estos datos sugieren que el uso de té de manzanilla y la precisión de la higiene oral no fueron suficientes para prevenir la MO.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN La manzanilla (Matricaria recutita L., Chamomilla recutita L. y Matricaria chamomilla L.), es conocida por su alto contenido de compuestos fenólicos que le confieren propiedades antiinflamatorias, antisépticas y antimutagénicas. En este estudio se evaluó el porcentaje de fenoles totales y la germinación en cinco periodos de almacenamiento de semillas de M. recutita (5, 31, 75, 96 y 128 días). Además, se evaluó el efecto de citoquininas (6-Bencil Amino Purina, BAP y Kinetina) y auxinas (α-Ácido Naftalen Acético, ANA) en la brotación in vitro de esta especie. Se evidenció que la concentración total de fenoles disminuyó de 13.8% a 1.9% en los cinco periodos de almacenamiento evaluados y que los porcentajes de germinación aumentaron de 2.2% a los cinco días a 8,9% a los 128 días de almacenamiento, mostrándose evidencia de una correlación de -0.989 entre la germinación y el contenido de fenoles totales. Los mejores resultados para inducir brotación (5 brotes/explante) fueron obtenidos en el medio de cultivo MS con citoquininas.


ABSTRACT Chamomile (Matricaria recutita L., Chamomilla recutita L., and Matricaria chamomilla L.) is known for its high content of phenolic compounds that confer anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antimutagenic properties. This study evaluated the percentage of total phenols and germination in five storage periods of M. recutita seeds (5, 31, 75, 96 and 128 days). In addition, the effect of cytoki-nins (6-Benzyl Amino Purine, BAP and Kinetin) and auxins (α-Naphthalene Acetic Acid, ANA) on in vitro sprouting of this species was evaluated. It was evidenced that the total concentration of phenols decreased from 13.8% to 1.9% in the five storage periods evaluated and that the germination percentages increased from 2.2% at five days to 8.9% at 128 days of storage, showing evidence of a correlation of -0.989 between the germination and the content of total phenols. The best results to induce sprouting (5 shoots/ explant) were obtained in the MS culture medium with cytokinins.

RESUMEN Fundamento: existe una gama de productos naturales, dentro de los que están los fitoterapéuticos, donde se destaca la manzanilla para tratar la enfermedad periodontal inflamatoria debido a la acción antiinflamatoria, cicatrizante, antialérgica, analgésica, antiséptica y bacteriostática que esta planta posee. Se ha demostrado que la manzanilla actúa también sobre la placa dentobacteriana, principal factor de riesgo de la enfermedad periodontal y es utilizada para el tratamiento de procesos agudos y crónicos periodontales. Objetivo: establecer las bases científicas del empleo de la manzanilla en el tratamiento de las enfermedades periodontales. Métodos: la búsqueda de la información se realizó en un periodo de seis meses y se emplearon las siguientes palabras: manzanilla, matricaria recutita; a partir de la información obtenida se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de un total de 150 artículos publicados en las bases de datos PubMed, Hinari, SciELO y Medline mediante el gestor de búsqueda y administrador de referencias EndNote, de ellos se utilizaron 52 citas seleccionadas para realizar la revisión, 40 de ellas de los últimos cinco años. Resultados: la manzanilla es nativa en muchos países de Europa, y se cultivan en países como Alemania, Egipto, Francia, España, Italia, Marruecos, y en partes de Europa del Este. Las diversas plantas de manzanilla son muy distintas y requieren su propio conjunto de condiciones para crecer. Sus propiedades, acciones terapéuticas y principios activos varían de una especie a otra. Conclusiones: la Matricaria chamomilla y la Phania matricarioides son de probada eficacia terapéutica en el tratamiento de enfermedades periodontales agudas y crónicas.


ABSTRACT Background: there is a range of natural products, including phytotherapeutic, which highlights the chamomile to treat inflammatory periodontal disease due to the anti-inflammatory, healing, antiallergic, analgesic, antiseptic and bacteriostatic that this plant possesses. It has been shown that chamomile also acts on dentobacterial plaque, the main risk factor for periodontal disease and is used for the treatment of acute and chronic periodontal processes. Objective: to establish the scientific basis of the use of chamomile in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Methods: the search of the information was carried out in a period of six months and the following words were used: chamomile, matricaria recutita; Based on the information obtained, a bibliographic review was made of a total of 150 articles published in the PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline databases by means of the search manager and the EndNote reference manager. Of these, 52 selected citations were used to perform the review, 40 of them from the last five years. Results: Chamomile is native to many countries in Europe, and is grown in countries such as Germany, Egypt, France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, and in parts of Eastern Europe. The various chamomile plants are very different and require their own set of conditions to grow. Its properties, therapeutic actions and active principles vary from one species to another. Conclusions: Matricaria chamomilla and Phania matricarioides are of proven therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of acute and chronic periodontal diseases.

BACKGROUND@#The high rates of atopic dermatitis among children, treatment failures and treatment costs have created the search for new therapies to control flares of atopic dermatitis.@*OBJECTIVES@#We compared the efficacy and safety of topical essential oil (German Chamomile) versus topical steroids (hydrocortisone 1%) in controlling flares of atopic dermatitis.@*METHOD@#We randomly selected 60 children diagnosed of AD or children that qualified to the criteria of AD. They we’re randomly grouped into three. Twenty for Essential Oil (EO) group, twenty for Steroid group (SG) and Twenty for placebo (distilled water) group. They were advised to apply medicine kept in uniform brown plastic bottles 3x a day for 4 weeks. Data were recorded weekly using the EASI (Eczema Score Index) scoring. Other topical medications such as emollients and moisturizers were continued.@*RESULTS@#At week 4 control of flaring was achieved; 42% for EO group and 55% for steroid group. The differences in treatment effects were not statistically significant.@*CONCLUSION@#Essential oil was comparable in cure rate to mild topical steroid. Essential oil can be safe and affordable. However further study in a wider scale is recommended.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease associated with delayed wound healing of oral ulcers by increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular apoptosis. Objective to evaluate the influence of Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α) and apoptosis in rats with DM treated with chamomile extract or triamcinolone. Material and Methods Wistar male rats (210.0±4.2 g) were divided into five groups: negative control group (NCG) without diabetes; positive control group (PCG) with DM (alloxan, 45 mg/kg); and groups treated with chamomile extract (normoglycemic= NCG group and diabetic= DCG group) and with triamcinolone (TG). Traumatic ulcers were performed on all animals that received topical triamcinolone, chamomile extract or saline 12/12 hours for ten days. Results On days five and ten the animals were euthanized and the ulcers were analyzed by light microscopy, TUNEL assay, and immunohistochemically (TNF-α). The NCG (p=0.0062), PCG (p=0.0285), NCG (p=0.0041), and DCG (p<0.0001) groups were completely healed on the 10th day, however, there was no healing on the TG (p=0.5127) group. The TNF-α expression showed a significant reduction from the 5th to the 10th day in NCG (p=0.0266) and DCG (p=0.0062). In connective tissue, the TUNEL assay showed a significant reduction in the number of positive cells in NCG (p=0.0273) and CNG (p=0.0469) and in the epithelium only in CDG (p=0.0320). Conclusions Chamomile extract can optimize the healing of traumatic oral ulcers in diabetic rats through the reduction of apoptosis in the epithelium and TNF-α expression.

Objective To investigate the effect of drought stress and organic fertilizer on German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) nutrient uptake, leaf chlorophyll content and osmotic adjustment under field conditions. Methods This experiment was carried out through a randomized complete block design with a split factorial arrangement of treatments in three replications. The main plots were subjected to the following irrigation treatments: irrigation after 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 mm evaporation from Class A pan. The sub-plots were treated with three vermicompost doses (0, 5 and 10 t/ha). Results Although drought stress reduced the nutrient percentages in the shoots, application of vermicompost enhanced the nutrient percentages, particularly when the plants were subjected to moderate to severe drought stress conditions. Moreover, the results of this study showed that the interaction between irrigation treatments and vermicompost rates on leaf chlorophyll content was significant. Comparison between the combined treatments indicated that under normal irrigation and moderate drought stress conditions chamomile plants received 5 and 10 t/ha vermicompost showed significantly higher leaf chlorophyll content comparing to the control treatment. Conclusions Totally, organic fertilization by vermicompost could partly alleviate the effect of drought stress on chamomile by increasing N, P and K uptake and leaf soluble sugar, especially in stressed treatments.

Introducción: La xerostomía es una condición crónica que afecta a un alto porcentaje de adultos mayores, que deben ser tratados paliativamente mediante el uso de sustitutos salivales; sin embargo estos productos no se encuentran disponibles en el mercado nacional. Objetivos Evaluar la eficacia de un nuevo sustituto salival a base de manzanilla y semillas de linaza en la disminución de la sintomatología asociada a xerostomía en individuos adultos mayores. Metodología Se incluyeron 34 voluntarios adultos mayores con xerostomía de diverso origen. Un nuevo sustituto salival a base de manzanilla y semillas de linaza y un sustituto convencional a base de carboximetilcelulosa fueron testados en un ensayo clínico aleatorizado, cruzado, con período de blanqueamiento. Resultados El 100 por ciento de los sujetos presentó sensación de boca seca, el 58,8 por ciento sensación de saliva espesa, el 52,9 por ciento necesitaba beber líquidos para deglutir los alimentos y tenía sensación de dificultad para tragar. La sensación de ardor lingual se registró en el 23,5 por ciento de los individuos. Las enfermedades más frecuentes en la muestra analizada fueron la hipertensión arterial y la artritis. Los resultados del ensayo clínico indican que el sustituto salival a base de manzanilla y semillas de linaza disminuye significativamente la sensación de boca seca y la sensación de saliva espesa (test de Wilcoxon p < 0,05). Conclusión El nuevo sustituto salival a base de manzanilla y semillas de linaza es efectivo en el alivio de la sintomatología asociada a xerostomía en adultos mayores, por lo que puede contribuir a mejorar la calidad de vida de la población afectada por esta condición.


Introduction: Xerostomia is a common chronic health condition that affects a great number of elderly people. Palliative treatment, such as salivary substitutes should be used, but these products are not accessible in the Chilean market. Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of a new Chamomile and linseed based saliva substitute in the reduction of xerostomía-associated symptomatology in elderly people. Methodology Forty elderly subjects presenting with xerostomia of various origins were selected. Chamomile and linseed based saliva substitute and a carboxymethylcellulose based conventional artificial saliva were tested using a double-blind, randomized, cross-over clinical trial with an intervining wash out period. Results All (100 percent) of subjects had a sensation of dry mouth, and 58.8 percent mentioned a sensation of thick saliva, 52.9 percent needed to drink liquids to swallow, and with a sensation of swallowing difficulty. Burning tongue sensation was recorded in 23.5 percent of the patients. The most frequent pathologies in the sample were arterial hypertension and arthritis. Results of the clinical tests showed that Chamomile and linseed based saliva substitute significantly relieves the sensation of dry mouth and the sensation of thick saliva (Wilcoxon test P < .05). Conclusion New chamomile and linseed based saliva substitute was effective in relieving xerostomia symptoms in elderly people, and could improve the quality of life of population affected by this condition.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the effect of ethanolic extract of chamomile on balance and motor learning in rats receiving scopolamine and intact rats. Methods: Fourty-two rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 7). Control group received distilled water. Rats in Group 2 were given 1 mg/kg scopolamine. Groups 3 and 4 received chamomile extract 200 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg, respectively, and scopolamine simultaneously for 20 days. Intact groups (Groups 5 and 6) only received chamomile extract 200 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg, respectively. Motor coordination of rats was assessed with rotarod apparatus. Results:According to the obtained results, compared with the control group, scopolamine significantly decreased time spent on rotarod performance (P Conclusions: The results of this study indicated the high antioxidant property and protective effect of chamomile extract on motor coordination in the groups that received scopolamine.
